Dr. William Chu Kwan is a spine surgeon specializing in complex, minimally invasive, and endoscopic spine surgery at Vancouver General Hospital.
He earned his medical degree from McGill University before moving to Toronto to complete his orthopedic surgery residency. During his residency, he also trained as a surgeon-scientist, earning a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto under the supervision of Dr. James Drake, neurosurgeon and Surgeon-in-Chief at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).
As a dual fellowship-trained surgeon, Dr. Chu Kwan first completed a Comprehensive Fellowship in Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Spine Surgery in Vancouver. He then pursued advanced subspecialty training in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery through a Neurosurgical Fellowship at the University of Miami under the supervision of Drs. Michael Y. Wang and Allan D. Levi.
An active clinician-scientist, Dr. Chu Kwan’s research focuses on translating innovations in surgical tools and techniques into improved patient outcomes. His work has been supported by multiple funding agencies, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and recognized with numerous awards, including Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships. He currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Council of Osteoporosis Canada and has previously served on the boards of Osteoporosis Canada and the Centre for Immigrant and Community Services.
Dr. Chu Kwan is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia and holds a cross-appointment with the Division of Neurosurgery. He is fluent in English, French, Spanish, and Cantonese.
